There are nine dental specialties recognized by the American and Canadian Dental Associations. Prosthodontics is one of them. Prosthodontists have specialist level training beyond that of General Dentists in areas of restorative dentistry that include: crowns, bridges, dentures, dental implants, cosmetics, dental and facial birth and developmental defects, trauma damage, and jaw dysfuctions and including temporomandibular joint dysfuntions. Prosthodontists are also highly trained in the technical aspects of laboratory fabrication of complex dental prosthetics and complex restoration of dental and facial esthetics.

Cosmetic Dentistry or Esthetic Dentistry deals with the enhancement and beautification of the human smile. This requires an extensive understanding of the three elements which compose the smile, namely lips, gums and teeth and the understanding of how these three elements collaborate together to make the most pleasing result.

Dental implants are machine-made replacements for tooth roots. Modern Dental Implants are threaded screws which when fused to bone, can receive attachments for posts, crowns or other types of connectors. They can be used to anchor a single missing tooth, multiple teeth, or support a denture, or even restore an entire mouth of lost natural teeth.
